The Federal Election Commission is once again moving forward with a proposal initiated by a Trump-nominated commissioner to make it easier for political donors to conceal their identities from the public.

Under the proposed rulemaking, the FEC would create a streamlined process for donors who claim there is a “reasonable probability” that they could face harassment for their donations to request that the commission redact their personal information, including their mailing addresses, occupation, and employer names. When requests are approved, donors would be identified in public reports simply by their first and last names, which in most cases is not enough information to positively identify who was behind a given donation.
