President Trump’s nominee for the number two position at the Department of Labor was recently a consultant for Walmart, the largest private employer in the country, but won’t have to recuse from matters involving the giant retailer that may come before the agency.
Last month, Trump nominated lawyer Keith Sonderling to serve as the new deputy labor secretary, a position that requires Senate confirmation. During the first Trump administration, Sonderling worked in various positions at the Department of Labor’s wage and hour division, before beginning a new role in September 2020 as a commissioner of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency that investigates civil rights issues in the workplace.
